Homemade Playdough Recipe
When my friend brought over homemade playdough—along with a meal after I had just welcomed our third baby—I was an instant fan! The texture is incredibly soft and smooth, and it stays that way for a long time if you store it in a plastic bag.
I was surprised by how easy it is to make homemade playdough. As pictured, I made red and green batches as part of our Christmas advent activities, but you can use any colors you like. You can even mix in scents and glitter for extra fun. My kids absolutely love it and play for hours. It’s the perfect activity for them to do alongside me while I cook. They love using real cooking utensils to play and create their own pretend “food”.
3 cups all purpose flour
3 cups water
6 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup salt
3 tablespoons oil
Around 6 drops food coloring of choice
Add flour, cream of tartar and salt to a saucepan and stir. Add remaining ingredients and stir again.
Heat to medium low. Cook and stir dough in the saucepan until it begins to solidify. Don’t worry if there are lumps! This process may take about 5 minutes.
Stir until the dough starts to gather together around the spoon. Dump dough onto a piece of parchment paper and let cool.
Knead your dough while it’s still warm to work out the lumps.
Notes: If you’re adding multiple colors, you could wait to add the food coloring until after you’ve cooked it. Split the dough into baggies, add food coloring, and then “knead” the dough while inside the bag.
